Children's Literature Databases

  • NoveList Plus
NoveList Plus can help you find books on a topic. Try searching for a specific country, or even a broad search like MULTICULTURALISM. You can limit to age categories, and see lists of recommended reading, award winners, and curricular connections. Remember that you will have to search our catalog to see if we own the particular book you find through NoveList.
  • Children's Literature Comprehensive Database
This database will also help you find children's materials. You can search by age, grade, and lexile level, among others. Be sure to search our catalog to see if Milner owns the book!

Search Tips

Multicultural books are in all areas of the Teaching Materials Center (Easy, Fiction, Non-Fiction, etc.).

To find multicultural books in the TMC, start at the library catalog.

1. Limit your search to the TMC - watch this video to find out how.

2.  Instead of doing a subject search for multicultural literature, try a specific country and add the words juvenile literature.  For example, type China juvenile literature as a subject search.  This will bring up fiction books for a variety of age levels. Or, for a more broad search, do a keyword search for the country or ethnicity you are looking for (e.g. Japan or Japanese; Vietnam or Vietnamese).

Remember, books in the Easy section of the TMC are generally for younger grades (K - 2), and books in the Fiction section are generally for grade 3 and up.

3. If you find a book that you like, look at the subject headings that are used in the catalog and click on them for more books within that subject.

4. Some general subject searches are multiculturalism, multicultural and multicultural education. (Remember to limit the search to the TMC!)

5. Don't forget to include multicultural celebrations, foods, activities, folktales, games, dances, music, and art in your lesson plans/projects.
